Life in Suspension

It is very, very, very likely that I will be going HKU.

Without a scholarship!

T.T

Course fees are pretty affordable, costing around RM 225,000 (at exchange rate of RM 1 = 4.5 HKD) for my 5 year med course.

But after including other costs (which mounted to be A LOT!) I might spend around RM 350k-400k during that 5 years at the current exchange rate.

*gasp*

p.s. guess who am I dropping the universe-sized hint at? hehe =)

Who do you love the most?

Today the 4 year olds listened to a story titled "Who do you love the most?" 你最爱谁?

At the end, the teacher asked them, one by one, who they loved the most among their friends; they chose their favourite and went up to hug that friend.

Zu Cern picked Jun Han.

Yi Shuen picked Yan Zhen.

Ja An picked Jun Han (2nd time! hee); this hug looked damn awkward though haha

Ging Yee picked Yi Shuen. (another awkward one!)

The 2nd last one to choose was Rayden.

Teacher: 亦杰,你最爱谁? Rayden, who do you love the most?

Rayden: 。。。。

Teacher: 来,告诉老师。。Come, tell teacher...

Rayden: 。。。。

Teacher: 没关系, 你小小声告诉老师。。。It's okay, just whisper into my ears...

Rayden: 那个戴手表的那个... The one with the wristwatch...

Teacher: 姚老师啊? Teacher Yiaw?
(Another teacher who always wears a watch)

Rayden: 不是啦,小的。No la, a small one (meaning another kid, not a grown up... haha)

Teacher: 。。是不是。。 俊涵? Is it Jun Han?

Rayden: *Nods head*

After much persuasion from the teacher, he trudges up to Jun Han.

Shy betul~~ haha
... which ended in a group hug!!

Finally, the last kid was Li Xian.

Guess who he chose?

杨老师! (Does this even need translation? Me la. XD)

Though he is pretty rebellious and angst-ridden (his emotions fluctuate faster than a heartbeat) I felt so warm and fuzzy inside. Simply, to be loved =)

*hugs back Li Xian*

So have you hugged a loved one today?

NUS MBBS (medicine) interview experience

Just got the reply from NUS; a no for MBBS and they offered me bioengineering, but anyway here's how the interview went =)

There are 2 rounds of interview, first by faculty members (eg professors), then by those working in the medical profession(eg doctors, nurses) / current students. Each round should take around half an hour (but my first round was around 10-15 mins.. hopefully it was cause they ran out of questions to ask! but I didn't get chosen anyway so. haha)

First round: Aha the tough one! By 3 professors. Be prepared to think on your feet as their questions can be very diverse and unpredictable. The questions that I got:
1. What do you know about the life of a Singaporean doctor?
2. What do you think of doctors on call in which they may work for 36 hours non stop?
3. For pilots, they cannot work for more than a certain amount of hours (eg they need adequate amount of sleep) while doctors are not granted such a privilege. Why is that so?
4. Why choose NUS
5. Why should we choose you
6. (because I said I wasn't money minded for question 5, they said most doctors come in saying they don't work for the money, but eventually they get involved in unethical behaviour too, eg performing unnecessary operations etc just for the money) Why do you think doctors nowadays seem to value money more than patients' welfare? What should be done to change this situation?
7. What do you know about the Singapore health policy (and I think I mentioned it was better than the Malaysian one, so) why do you think it's better than Malaysian's policies?

Second round: I was interviewed by 2 doctors. This round is exceptionally helpful for bright, cheerful, talkative ones who wouldn't mind telling your family history dating back to your great-grandparents (honestly! they would bear with you till you were done)

Basically they asked me things like:
1. Tell me more about your A level course.
2. What's your favourite A level subject?
3. What's your hobby? (then i replied reading, which is true to some extent; I do read, just not as frequent as I would prefer)
4. Can you tell me about one of the books you've read (I elaborated on Picture of Dorian Gray; actually I was thinking of Roald Dahl but some of his adult books had highly sexually explicit content, so I had to forgo that ^^)
5. What's the difference between government and private hospitals in Malaysia?
6. How have you displayed leadership qualities through past experiences?
5. Do you have anything to ask us? (This question caught me by surprise so I gave them a very, very hesitant no. Because I honestly didn't know what to ask!)

As for attire, a bit less formal than the HKU interview(everyone there donned coats!); guys wore ties and gals just wore formal wear since wearing a coat will practically leave you drenched in sweat before you even enter the interviewing room, memandangkan the awesome weather in Singapore =)

Apparently they only take in 10 international students per intake and last year there were 1 or 2 Malaysians (and so they say; not officially verified information) Candidates will be evaluated based on such scores:

50% A level/other exams results
50% Interview & Essay (title will be given on the spot, a few days before the med interview) & ECA (extra curricular activities)

Somewhere around NUS; didn't get a pic of YLL School of Medicine

All the best for those applying in the future! Don't be shaken on the 1st round though; give yourself time to think before answering their questions, cause it's hard to take back what you've already said!

Oh ya my essay question: Websites, blogs, social networking sites have been proliferating of late. In your opinion, what effect does this have on the educational community? Should restrictions be implemented?

Dwindling numbers

Susahnya buat gathering!

Absentees:
WY - Too far up in Alor Setar and only willing to come if we sponsor everything haa
BS - Having exam tomorrow (she's studying medicine, so. That pretty sums up her stress level XD )
KK - Busy doing housework (you can literally ice-skate on the floor at her house o.O) and having dance practice later
LY - Having A Level exams!! Good luck good luck good luck =)
Hui Lee - working @ subzero (and ironically, resigning on Sunday, which is tomorrow T.T)
CC - her 1st week staying outside home (somewhere near HELP uni college) and her parents want her to stay in and don't go out (???)

Those who made it:

@ the Apartment, The Curve. We weren't exactly famished so we ordered dessert. Food was honestly just okay and very pricey! I paid like RM 9 for a bottle of fanta orange which tasted exactly like miranda orange softdrink...

But we still managed to entertain ourselves by laughing at a flea market shop attendant across the street (haha 江山易改本性难移! Us will be us ^^)

Then.. to the movies--A Nightmare on Elm Street!

The sort of movie where the (usually) hideous villain suddenly pops out and attempts to scare the soul out of you, which is acceptable for my definition of horror. Thai & Korean horror movies are an absolute, definite no. (I've only watched Shutter and the scene where she suddenly materialized in the photo is still oven-fresh in my mind! scarryyyy)

Hopefully there will be full attendance for the next gathering! Till then =) Reblog this post [with Zemanta]

Is it love?

Yan Ting & Andrew

Today during lunch.

4 kids at the table. Yan Ting & Andrew finished their meals and got up to clean up at the same time.
E Jayn

E Jayn: Yan Ting 和 Andrew 一起吃完,他们就会一起结婚! Since Yan Ting & Andrew finished at the same time, they will get married!
Yeu Han

Yeu Han: 那我要跟你一起吃完。。。Then I want to finish eating the same time as you...

E Jayn: You say that one more time and I'm going to slap you're buttock! (haha she said this in english)

Yeu Han: 杨老师,什么是buttock? (Teacher, what is buttock?)

Big, Bad World

Introducing Rayden, our cute lil' four year old who'll melt any teacher's heart with his cheeky tongue-sticking-out feat and by walking like a drunk!

Today, he was sort of ostracized by the rest of the class during playtime; the first time I actually saw him being left out during play. From what I saw, the kids seemed to like grouping up and imitating each other, and agreeing with majority. And Rayden was simply part of the unfortunate process of eliminating the weak link.

But it does still ring true for adults, doesn't it? We all like finding our own clique, get acknowledged and "exile" the "different" one just to satisfy our inner insecurities. We don't like our authority/position in a society to be challenged and so we just remove the problems.

Just that I felt a pang of sadness when I saw how hurt he became. Because if it were to happen to me, I would cry too, only inwardly. Children are bad actors/actresses, and it's such a good thing.

Unfortunately, though, we adults are excellent actors.
